Our last book club meeting was about the book “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck. It is a story about how greed completely destroyed a family. We agreed that it was beautifully written and we would like to read more books by Steinbeck.
The story reminded us of what can happen when a person wins a lottery or inherits a great deal of money. Sometimes friends or relatives expect handouts. Sometimes the people don’t divulge what happened and live their lives the way they always did.
The next book is “Go Set a Watchman” by Harper Lee. Written before “To Kill a Mockingbird”, it tells the story of an adult Scout returning to visit Malcomb from New York. Set in the backdrop of one of the most monumental changes in American society, as we see increasing civil rights tensions and an end to segregation, more divisions become apparent. This book exposed the prejudices between races, North versus South and the different generations. It is an amazing insight into American history, which raises issues that are still topical today.
